KAWARTHA LAKES: A familiar gathering place, in Oakwood, is set to receive a careful refresh, as restoration work begins, this month, on the community’s historic library building.
The Oakwood Library will undergo several months of repairs, as the City of Kawartha Lakes invests in preserving the structure while improving safety and accessibility for residents.
Work on the heritage building is expected to begin in early April and continue through September. Planned upgrades include: brick replacement and repairs; restoration of stonework, in multiple areas; and the rebuilding of concrete stairs, at both the north and south entrances, complete with new railings. Additional improvements will see the installation of a new steel door, for the accessible lift, along with painting and repairs to the existing entrance doors.
The project is part of an ongoing commitment to maintaining community spaces which serve residents of all ages.
“This restoration work is about protecting a space [which] means so much to the Oakwood community, while also ensuring it remains safe and accessible for everyone who uses it,” said Jacqueline Chartier, Library Specialist, Outreach and Community Engagement. “We’re excited to see these improvements come to life and to continue welcoming visitors, throughout the process.”
Despite the construction, the Oakwood Library will remain open during regular hours. Visitors will be asked to use alternate entrances, at different stages of the project, with clear signage posted to help guide the way.
Ms. Chartier noted, maintaining access during the work is a key priority.
“Libraries are essential community hubs, and we wanted to make sure residents could continue to access services, programs, and resources with minimal disruption,” she said. “We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we complete this important work.”
For many in the community, the updates are a welcome investment in a well-used and well-loved space.
“It’s great to see the library being taken care of,” said Oakwood resident Margot Francis. “It’s such an important part of the community, and these improvements will make a big difference, especially when it comes to accessibility.”
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead when visiting the library, during the construction period, and to follow posted signage for safe entry.
Once complete, the restoration will help ensure the Oakwood Library continues to serve as a vibrant and accessible community hub for years to come.

Local reading habits feel quiet and simple until access stops working the way it should. I still appreciate the rhythm of checking community news, so small service issues stand out more than they probably would for somebody who barely notices the publication in the first place. That was exactly when culpeper star exponent customer service became relevant for me, because getting a clear answer about a subscription or access question matters more than digging through scattered help pages. News is the reason I show up. Support is what decides whether the routine stays easy to keep.
