BROCK: Residents of Brock Township and nearby communities will soon benefit from an improved transit service, as Durham Region Transit launches Route 618, on Monday, May 5th. The new fixed-route bus service will connect Beaverton, Cannington, Sunderland, Port Perry, and Manila, operating every 90 minutes, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Route 618 will replace the current On Demand transit service, along the corridor, during weekday daytime hours. On Demand service will remain available outside of Route 618’s scheduled hours. Passengers in Port Perry will also have the option to connect with Route 905 which links to Uxbridge and the Whitby GO Station.
"Beginning Monday, May 5th, residents will benefit from more connectivity and convenience, making travel between key communities in north Durham easier and more reliable," said, Brock Township Mayor, Walter Schummer, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Transit Executive Committee. "We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our community."
Durham Region Transit General Manager, Bill Holmes said, the new service aligns with regional goals. “Durham Region Transit is excited to introduce Route 618, as part of our ongoing efforts to improve transit services across Durham Region,” said Mr. Holmes. “This new route, supported by the 2025 Durham Region Budget, reflects our commitment to increasing transit service hours and providing a more streamlined service delivery model.”
For some seniors, the introduction of a regular bus route comes as a welcome change. “I don’t drive anymore. So, getting to medical appointments or even just visiting friends, in nearby towns, can be a challenge,” said Linda Carver, a retiree living in Beaverton. “Having a reliable schedule and not needing to book ahead, with On Demand, will make a big difference for people like me.”
Route 618 is expected to improve access to services, support greater independence for residents, and foster stronger ties between communities in the northern part of Durham Region.
