Movement for Life: The key to long term wellness

LAUREN WALKER Special to The Standard

Over the course of twenty one years, I’ve had a lot of experience working with people. I’ve learned what you need for long term success. Most of this may even apply beyond just health considerations.

Self Discipline

I’ve learned, if it really matters to you, you’ll do it. Unless you’re willing to put the effort in, nothing will change, so it all begins and ends with you. Those who keep showing up and making the effort will benefit in the long run.

Accountability

The next step is owning your choices, after all it is your growth. Self awareness is key to your success because you’re less likely to repeat the same mistakes.

Small Changes

Do one small thing every day to help yourself. Even if it means having one less can of pop, then do that. If it means going for a walk around the block, then do that. You have to start somewhere.

Consistency

You’ve got to become willing to do one small thing every day. Making these small, consistent changes will eventually become routine. Eventually, as your body changes, there will be less of an uphill struggle and more of an anticipation from the results. Consistency is key to keep you accountable, as it instills discipline.

Eat Well

Here's a picture for you. You put gas in your car to help it run. Food is the gas and you are the car, so the right fuel makes all the difference.

Persistence

You may not be successful at first because it takes time and effort to balance eating properly with exercise. However, being willing to do some homework, to figure out what works for you, will yield desired changes.

Invest in Healthy Habits

“Invest in your health now or prepare to invest in your illness later.” I challenge you to really look in to it, and total up the cost of your bad habits. You’ll find it’s not just costing you financially but physically as well.
