As our parents age, their needs change. Are we ready to accommodate their ever changing lives? New issues arise, and perhaps they have to frequent doctors appointments and its your job to take them. It can become difficult for them to navigate the world, especially if they have mobility issues.
Our clients vary in age and have a variety of mobility issues caused by age related health problems. It requires us to be very creative with our clients, especially those who are restricted.
How do we get them moving? Let’s remember safety is our number one concern. Some of our clients are bound to a wheelchair but still have use of their arms and legs. It may not be realistic to expect someone restricted to a wheelchair will be able to stand up. We have to work with what the client can do safely.
For example: If our client's goal is to be able to get from their bed, to the wheelchair and then to the washroom, then that’s what we work towards. Keep in mind, this is difficult for someone who has been immobile for a long time. Immobility leads to muscle atrophy which means weakness. To become able to pull yourself up under your own power requires practice under qualified supervision.
Hip strength is imperative for mobility and functionality. We have clients who haven’t stood up in over a year which affects their quality of life. To get up and put socks on, clothe themselves, or even go to the washroom cannot be done without assistance. Our job is to help restore functionality which can only be assessed on an individual basis. If you want to get moving again, we’ll help you find a way.
