KAWARTHA LAKES: Young readers across Kawartha Lakes are invited to make a splash this summer, as Kawartha Lakes Public Library launches its 2026 Summer Reading Club, a season-long program, designed to inspire a love of reading, while keeping children and families engaged through fun activities and community events.

This year's theme, “Dive In,” draws inspiration from the lakes, rivers, and waterways which help define the region. Through books, activities, and special events, participants will be encouraged to explore new worlds, discover exciting stories, and create lasting summer memories.

Online registration is now open, while in-person registration begins June 20th, at all Kawartha Lakes Public Library branches. Participants will receive a Summer Reading Passport which allows them to track their reading progress, complete challenges, and celebrate achievements throughout the summer.

“We're excited to welcome children, teens, and families back for another summer of reading and discovery,” said Jacqueline Chartier, Library Specialist – Outreach and Community Engagement. “The Summer Reading Club is about much more than books. It's about encouraging curiosity, building confidence, and creating opportunities for families to connect through reading and shared experiences. We want every child to know reading can take them anywhere.”

The program features reading challenges, collectible rewards, crafts, special guests, Touch-A-Truck events, Storywalks, and Pop-Up Storytimes which bring stories beyond library walls and into communities, throughout Kawartha Lakes. Participants will also have opportunities to enter prize draws, including a chance to win tickets to Ripley's Aquarium of Canada.

Adults haven't been forgotten. The library's Great Lakes-themed Summer Reading Challenge invites grown-up readers to explore new titles, while virtually journeying across the Great Lakes, for a chance to win a YETI water bottle.

For many local families, the annual program has become a summer tradition.

“Our kids look forward to Summer Reading Club, every year,” said Lindsay resident Sarah Stone, whose children have participated for several summers. “The activities keep them excited about reading, during the break, and it's a great way to stay connected with the library and the community.” Nine-year-old participant Ethan Murray said he's especially looking forward to earning rewards and exploring new books.

“I like finding stories about adventures and animals,” he said. “The reading challenges make it fun because it feels like a game.”

Ms. Chartier said the program is designed to welcome readers of all abilities and interests.

“Whether you're enjoying picture books, graphic novels, chapter books, audiobooks, or reading together as a family, every story counts,” she said. “We hope families will dive in with us and discover all the amazing adventures waiting at the library this summer.”

Summer Reading Club is free to join. More information, registration details, and a complete schedule of summer activities can be found on the library's website. Residents can also sign up for library newsletters to receive updates and activity announcements throughout the season.
