KAWARTHA LAKES: August 29th was a proud and celebratory day for the Lindsay community as Scott's Decorating Centre marked an impressive milestone: 70 years in business. The family-owned store, located in the heart of downtown Lindsay, has been a fixture in the community since September 1955, when founder Don Scott first opened its doors.
Originally launched as a paint and wallpaper shop, the store quickly grew into a place where Lindsay residents could find much more than home décor. In the early days, shelves were stocked with fine art supplies, rental equipment, and even puzzles, toys, games, and hobby materials. Over the years, however, the business adapted to changing consumer needs, gradually refining its focus back to its roots—offering high-quality paint, wallpaper, and expert advice to generations of homeowners and contractors.
The store has had three homes over the decades. From its first location at 1 Kent Street (1955–1959), to 79 Kent Street (1959–1966), before settling into its long-time home at 88 Kent Street, where it continues to operate today. Each move reflected the store’s steady growth and enduring presence downtown.
Ownership has also stayed in the family. Don Scott ran the business until 1987, when his daughter Devon and I purchased it and carried on the family legacy until her retirement in 2005. Today, Martin Scott, Don’s son, is at the helm. Martin recalls how his father approached him while he was working in Toronto:
“My father came to me when he was thinking about retirement,” Martin shared. “He asked if I’d be interested in buying the business, and I knew it was an opportunity to keep something meaningful in our family and in Lindsay.”
Martin notes that adaptability was key to the business’ survival.
“Do market research and see if the community will support your business,” he advises young entrepreneurs. “You have to know your customers and be willing to adjust.”
The 70th anniversary was marked with an open house on August 29th from noon to 1 p.m. The celebration drew a steady stream of customers, friends, and long-time supporters. Sandwiches, watermelon, cake and refreshments were served, and special anniversary sales, including discounts of up to 70 percent, brought many through the doors. Local dignitaries and business leaders attended to show support, recognizing Scott’s Decorating Centre not only as a business success story but as a vital part of Lindsay’s commercial and cultural history.
For many in the community, Scott’s Decorating Centre is more than just a store—it’s a trusted neighbour that has been helping families make their houses into homes for seven decades. As the celebration wrapped up, the message was clear: in an era when many small businesses struggle to survive, Scott’s stands as a testament to family commitment, community support, and the value of personal service.
