Lindsay Muskies vs Trenton Golden Hawks Friday Night

CRAIG SCHROTER Special to The Standard

KAWARTHA LAKES: An empty net goal with 4 seconds left on the clock sealed the Lindsay Muskies fate as they fell by a score of 5 to 3 to the Trenton Golden Hawks Friday night. Trenton came out flying in the first period and kept the Muskies hemmed in their zone for long periods of time. They opened up a two goal lead on goals by Ryan Brown and Dalton Bancroft. If it weren’t for the strong goal ending by Ben Edwards in the Lindsay goal, the score could have been much worse. As it was Edwards kept things close and allowed his team to creep back into the match when Duncan Scullion scored his 4th of the year to give Lindsay some life heading into the second. Early in the second Edwards was at it again as he reached behind himself and batted a puck out of mid air to prevent a goal but at 1:24 Andrew Suriyuth scored to regain the Trenton two goal cushion. Lindsay defender Artem Guryev was handed a five minute major shortly afterward putting the Muskies at a decided disadvantage but the penalty killers came through and held the Golden Hawks in check. Jacob Dupuis scored at 9:38 for Lindsay to get them back within one and that is the way the second period would end. Early in the third period the Muskies found themselves with a minute and a half of a two man advantage. The Lindsay centers won all four offensive zone faceoffs, and they controlled the puck well but could not get the equalizer. The backbreaker came with Lindsay serving a bench minor for too many men on the ice. Adam Kim scored for the Hawks to put them up by a count of 4 to 2. Lindsay Captain Noah Vandervinne would score at 19:30 to give the Muskies one last gasp but Cameron Gaynor’s empty net goal at 19:56 rounded out the scoring. After the game Lindsay General Manager Sal Polito summed up the game saying that Trenton brought it hard in the first period, but after that the Muskies played them very evenly, adding that Edwards “stood on his head”, giving the team a chance to win. The next action for Lindsay is next Friday night when they host Cobourg.
