Kawartha Lakes soars toward naming osprey Official Bird

KAWARTHA LAKES: The city is set to take flight, with a new symbol of community pride and environmental stewardship: the osprey. Following months of public consultation and a vote, led by Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes, the osprey has emerged as the overwhelming favorite, to become the municipality’s official bird.

A report, presented to council, highlights the osprey’s strong connection to the area’s natural heritage. Known for its majestic flight and skillful fishing, the osprey is a common sight along the region’s many lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Its selection, as the official bird, reflects not only its prominence but also its alignment with the municipality’s focus on environmental preservation and biodiversity.

“This bird is an ideal choice,” said Thomas Luloff of Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes. “The osprey is already featured in the city’s branding, and its presence near our waterways underscores the importance of healthy ecosystems in our community.”

The initiative is also notable for its emphasis on community engagement. Residents were invited to vote for their preferred bird, earlier this year, and the osprey received widespread support. The designation comes at no financial cost, making it a meaningful yet budget-friendly way to promote local pride and environmental awareness.

Council is expected to officially adopt the osprey as the City of Kawartha Lakes’ official bird, during a meeting, later in November. The decision will solidify the osprey’s status, as a symbol of the region’s natural beauty and the shared commitment of its residents to safeguarding the environment.
