KAWARTHA LAKES: The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service (KLFRS) is sounding the alarm, not for an emergency, but for passionate individuals ready to step up and serve their community. Recruitment is now open for the Autumn 2025 Volunteer Firefighter class, and residents across the region are encouraged to apply.
“Have you been looking for a way to give back to your community? Do you enjoy the camaraderie which comes with working on a team? If so, we have an amazing opportunity for you!” said Fire Chief Terry Jones. “Being a volunteer firefighter is one of the most rewarding ways to serve.”
Applications are now being accepted, for nine stations actively seeking new volunteers: Station 5 in Dunsford, Station 14 in Woodville, Station 15 in Kirkfield, Station 16 in Carden, Station 18 in Kinmount, Station 19 in Coboconk, Station 20 in Burnt River, and Station 22 in Fenelon Falls.
To help potential applicants learn more about the role and responsibilities, KLFRS will host several open houses throughout June. These informal sessions offer a chance to meet current firefighters, tour the stations, and get answers to any questions.
“This is a fantastic way for community members to learn about what we do and how they can become part of our team,” said Volunteer Sarah McKenzie of Station 15. “Volunteer firefighting isn’t just about fighting fires, it’s about leadership, community involvement, and personal growth.”
The open house schedule is as follows: Station 15 in Kirkfield will host on Monday, June 9th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at 16 Monroe Street. On Tuesday, June 17th, Station 16 in Carden (12 Lake Dalrymple Road, Sebright), Station 5 in Dunsford (48 Community Centre Road), and Station 18 in Kinmount (24 Majestic Street) will all hold events, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Volunteer firefighters play a crucial role in protecting Kawartha Lakes residents from fires and other emergencies. They also support community events and help educate the public on fire safety.
“It’s more than just a job. It’s a commitment to your neighbours and your town,” added Ms. McKenzie. “You don’t need to have prior experience. If you’re willing to learn and work as part of a team, we’ll teach you everything you need to know.”
In addition to the sense of purpose and community pride, volunteers receive comprehensive training, earn extra income, and gain transferable life skills.
Applications close on June 20th, 2025. For full details on eligibility and how to apply, visit www.kawarthalakes.ca/VFF.
If your local station is not currently hiring, don’t be discouraged. “We encourage people to check back in the winter, for our Spring 2026 recruitment,” said Chief Jones. “There’s always a need for dedicated individuals.”
