DURHAM/KAWARTHA LAKES: No matter what federal party wins the 2025 election, Canada will have a new Prime Minister.

On Monday, January 6th, at a press conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Liberal Party of Canada leader.

“Since 2015, I have fought for this country, for you. To strengthen and grow the middle class, why we rallied to support each other during the pandemic, to advance reconciliation, to defend free trade on this continent, to stand strong with Ukraine and our democracy, to fight climate change and get our economy ready for the future,” Prime Minister Trudeau said.

The decision comes with the inclusion of shutting down the current session of parliament until March.

“Despite best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months, after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history. That is why this morning I advised the Governor General that we need a new session of parliament. She has granted this request and the House will be prorogued until March 24th.”

He then talked about why he is stepping down as leader of the party and the country.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m to have to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”

Prime Minister Trudeau said the new party leader will be chosen through a “robust, nationwide, competitive process.” Trudeau has been the country’s prime minister since 2015.
