KAWARTHA LAKES: The City of Kawartha Lakes is calling on residents to step up and serve their community, by becoming volunteer firefighters with the Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service (KLFRS). The application process for the Spring 2025 Recruitment Class is now open, offering an opportunity to make a difference in your neighbourhood.

“We’re looking for individuals who are dedicated, physically fit, and committed to teamwork,” said Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst. “Volunteer firefighting is a unique way to give back to your community, while learning valuable skills [which] can be applied in many areas of life.”

KLFRS is recruiting for all 19 fire stations across the municipality. Applicants must live within 15 kilometers of the fire station they apply to and are encouraged to select the station closest to their permanent residence.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter means joining a team which upholds the three lines of defense against fire: public education, fire safety standards, and emergency response. Volunteers gain hands-on experience, develop transferable skills, and earn extra income while playing a vital role in promoting safety.

“Being a volunteer firefighter has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said longtime volunteer Kevin Thompson. “You become part of a family, dedicated to helping others in their time of need.”

Applications are open until Tuesday, February 18th. For more details on the application process and requirements, visit www.kawarthalakes.ca/VFF.
