EPSOM & UTICA by Faye Ashton

March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers. June winds help the farmers who need to dry cut hay to bale for feed. May and June certainly have given us wind power this year. Spring has left for another year, and we welcome Summer and warmth.

Congratulations to all the students graduating from kindergarten to grade 1, grade 8 to high school, from high school to college or university into your chosen profession. It seemed like forever at first, but it will be hard to believe you’ve accomplished it all.

Otters Greenhouse is a must to visit before the end of June. The flowers and vegetables are exceptional, and there is still a beautiful and healthy selection still to choose from. From now until June’s end, all plants are half price. What more can we ask!

We are very sad to report Georgina Sutcliffe passed away Saturday, June 18th. Georgina and Pete lived in Utica on the Sutcliffe property. Georgina has experienced health problems since Pete’s passing and has resided at Lakeview Manor at Beaverton for some time, where she was well cared for.

This past Sunday, we paid tribute to two amazing fathers from this community.

Walter Kerry grew up here at Epsom and went to school at Epsom Public School. Later married Elva and raised their family at the home farm on the 6th Concession. Walter was very active in community life and enjoyed several musical groups he was part of.

Bill McKay came to our community at the age of 69. He and Melba built a beautiful home just east of Epsom and immediately became part of the community. Bill grew up in Manitoba and met Melba at University there. They moved to Pickering, where Bill was instrumental in starting the Pickering Museum and Community Care. He was also the Minister of that community. Bill had many talents he shared with us; one we all enjoyed was his love of music.

Both Walter and Rev. Bill will remain forever in our memory as caring community members, fathers, soloists and friends. Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers here and worldwide.

Come and worship at Epsom United Church next Sunday, June 26th, at 10 a.m. All are welcome.
