BROCK: With the nomination deadline fast approaching, Brock Township residents are being reminded, the window to file paperwork to run in the 2025 Mayoral By-Election closes on Friday, July 25th, at 2 p.m.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Mayor Walter Schummer, in late May. His departure created a vacancy which, under Ontario’s Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, must now be filled through a by-election rather than by council appointment.

"Now is the time, for anyone interested in leading our community, to step forward," said Tamra Kaiser, Communications and Tourism Coordinator for the Township of Brock. "We want to ensure residents are aware of the nomination process and feel encouraged to participate in this important democratic opportunity."

Nominations officially opened on July 7th, and must be submitted in person at the Clerk’s Office, located at 1 Cameron Street East, in Cannington. Interested candidates are encouraged to book an appointment in advance, by emailing to clerks@brock.ca.

The by-election itself will take place on Monday, September 8th, with advance voting opportunities available from September 3rd to 8th. Eligible voters can cast their ballots online, by telephone, or in person, at one of several Voter Assistance Centres which will be posted on the township’s website.

"This is a critical opportunity for residents to shape the future leadership of our township," said Acting Mayor Mike Jubb, who currently serves as Regional Councillor. "We’re encouraging everyone to participate, whether by running for office or making sure they are on the voters list."

Residents can confirm or update their information, by visiting the Brock Election webpage. All registered voters will receive a Voter Information Letter in the mail, in the weeks leading up to the election, detailing their voting options and credentials.

"This is about giving the people of Brock a voice," added, longtime Beaverton resident, Janet McRae, who said she’s watching the process closely. "After everything that’s happened in recent months, I hope we see candidates come forward who really care about our community and are ready to bring some stability back."

All information, regarding the by-election, including how to vote and nomination requirements, can be found at www.townshipofbrock.ca/election.
