KAWARTHA LAKES: Downtown detours are expected to last several more weeks, as Enbridge Gas continues with pipeline replacement, along Kent Street. Gas line reconstruction through the downtown portion of Kent Street is expected to continue until the end of March. The City has recently begun work on Phase Two of the Downtown Lindsay Reconstruction project. According to City staff, Kent Street is expected to remain closed between Lindsay Street and William Street for several months, with the roadway slated to reopen this summer. Local shoppers are encouraged to continue shopping downtown, as all businesses will remain open and accessible. The City has opted for a phased-in approach to construction downtown, to minimize the impact on businesses and tourism. Proposed construction next year would see the repaving of Kent Street, from William Street to Victoria Avenue, as well as Cambridge Street, from Peel Street to Russell Street. The plan for the final phase of work in the project, proposed for 2022, involves the reconstruction of William Street, York Street and Peel Street. The City’s economic development office added, several downtown businesses have utilized funding through the City’s Million Dollar Makeover program. This is a progressive initiative aimed at aiding local merchants to improve back entrances and signage, as well as complete building repairs and renovations through grants and loans.
