KAWARTHA LAKES: Growing demand for skilled trades workers was front and centre at a City of Kawartha Lakes Committee of the Whole meeting, on Tuesday, May 5th, as councillors received a memorandum, calling for stronger municipal support of trade programming at Fleming College’s Frost Campus.
The memorandum, brought forward by Ward 5 Councillor Mark Doble, asked the municipality to advocate for the advancement and enhancement of trade programs, already operating at the Frost Campus, including the Heavy Equipment Operator program, while also encouraging the expansion of additional skilled trades programs, currently offered at the college’s Sutherland Campus, in Peterborough.
Councillor Doble said, the initiative is about ensuring the Frost Campus continues to play an important role in workforce development and economic growth in the region.
“Skilled trades are critical to the future of our local economy,” the Councillor explained to his fellow committee members. “We have a tremendous opportunity to build on the strengths already present at Frost Campus and create more pathways for students to train and work close to home.”
The memorandum also asked the City to engage with Fleming College as an active partner, in the future development and vibrancy of the Frost Campus, while seeking additional opportunities to align shared priorities, particularly in the trades sector.
Councillor Doble noted, trades training continues to be in high demand across Ontario, with industries facing ongoing labour shortages in construction, transportation, heavy equipment operation and infrastructure-related fields.
“Investing in trades education benefits not only students, but employers and communities across Kawartha Lakes,” he said. “Strengthening these programs can help attract young people, support local businesses and encourage economic development throughout the municipality.”
Several councillors voiced support for the memorandum, during discussion, pointing to the importance of accessible training opportunities in rural communities and the long-standing presence of Frost Campus within the municipality.
The memorandum was received by committee, and will now move forward to a future council meeting for consideration by council.
