BROCK: Applause and pride filled Sunderland Town Hall, on Thursday, September 25th, as the Township of Brock hosted its inaugural Awards of Merit. The first-time event brought together residents, to recognize and celebrate the achievements of local volunteers, organizations, and leaders, whose work continues to strengthen and enrich community life.

Mayor Mike Jubb said, the evening was a chance to shine a light on people who often work quietly behind the scenes. “This celebration is all about recognizing the dedication, creativity, and generosity of our residents,” said Mayor Jubb. “We are incredibly fortunate to have so many individuals and groups who step up every day to make a difference.”

Among those recognized was Ken Jackson, honoured as Volunteer of the Year. A long-time Sunderland resident and Lions Club member, Mr. Jackson has raised significant funds for local development projects through the annual Scrap Metal Drive. “Ken’s generosity and dedication set an inspiring example of what it means to give back,” Mayor Jubb said.

The Beaverton Legion Branch 135 received the Community Services Group or Club Award, presented by Councillor Peter Frank. Their role, as an emergency relief centre, during this year’s ice storm, as well as their ongoing programs for seniors and veterans, earned them recognition. “Their service has created a safe and supportive space for so many in our community,” Councillor Frank noted.

Councillor Angela Canavan presented two awards during the evening. The Social Development Award went to The Nourish and Develop Foundation (TDNF), whose programs include: a food bank, Mobile Food Market, community kitchen, and transitional housing. “From food security to building resilience, TNDF empowers families and individuals to achieve lasting stability,” said Councillor Canavan. She also presented the Brock Accessibility Award to George Pilgrim, of Pilgrims Home Hardware in Sunderland, applauding his commitment to accessibility. “George embodies the values of professionalism, generosity, and community spirit,” she said.

Councillor Lynn Campbell honoured Brock Arts and Culture with the Arts, Heritage and Culture Award. The group was recognized for its creative projects, including the Fish Art Installation at the harbour and the Maple Leaf painting contest tied to the Maple Syrup Festival. “They’ve brought arts and culture to life in our township, especially through their partnerships with schools and parks,” said Councillor Campbell.

For her leadership in environmental stewardship, Sarah Cowley received the Environment and Climate Change Champion Award, from Councillor Cria Pettingill. Ms. Cowley was praised for her tireless work on the Blossom Trail, where hundreds of native trees, shrubs, and plants have transformed the Beaverton waterfront into a thriving natural space. “Her passion and persistence have left a lasting legacy,” said Councillor Pettingill.

Councillor Clair Doble presented the Sports and Recreation Award to Sherri Parr, commending her leadership with the Sunderland Stingerz Association. “Sherri’s coaching has helped young athletes build confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships,” Councillor Doble said. “She has truly changed lives through sport.”

As the inaugural Awards of Merit came to a close, the evening reflected a shared sense of pride across the township. “Congratulations to all the winners,” Mayor Jubb said. “And thank you to everyone who sent in a nomination. Together, we are building stronger, more caring communities.”
