BROCK: Brock Township is moving forward, with a project to honour local veterans, in a lasting and highly visible way. Council has approved the installation of commemorative Veterans Crosswalks, in Sunderland, Beaverton and Cannington, working in partnership with the local Royal Canadian Legion branches.

At a recent council meeting, councillors received letters of support from the Sunderland and Beaverton Legions endorsing the initiative. Following discussion, Council voted unanimously to proceed, directing staff to work with all three Legions on a cost-sharing plan, to have the crosswalks in place by Remembrance Day 2025.

Mayor Mike Jubb declared a conflict of interest on the vote, due to his membership in the Beaverton Legion, but expressed enthusiasm for the project once it was approved.

Any costs this year will be funded through the township’s Rate Stabilization Reserve. In a show of inter-municipal cooperation, the Town of Whitby has agreed to let Brock use its existing stencil design for the crosswalks, streamlining the process and reducing expenses.

“I would like to thank the Town of Whitby for offering the use of their stencil,” said Mayor Jubb. “This is very exciting and I’m looking forward to getting this done!”

Once completed, the commemorative crosswalks will serve as a public reminder of the service and sacrifice of veterans, offering both a point of pride for the community and a visible tribute for the veterans and their families in the community.
