Brock exploring local transit solutions to address service gaps

BROCK: Township Council is taking steps to address long-standing transit concerns with a motion from Mayor Walter Schummer calling for a “made in Brock” solution. The move comes after growing dissatisfaction with Durham Region Transit (DRT) services in the area.

During a recent council meeting, Mayor Schummer outlined the challenges facing Brock residents, citing discontinued regularly scheduled transit services by both DRT and GO Transit, reliance on outsourced on-demand services, and the region’s highest rate of unaccommodated ride requests.

“Public transit cannot be done haldway, or it’s doomed to fail,” Mayor Schummer said. He highlighted that Brock taxpayers are contributing over $1.5 million annually to DRT, not including development charges and other transit-related funds, but service levels have not met expectations.

The motion directs Township staff to hire a transit consultant to explore alternatives and assess legal and technical requirements for a local solution. Pre-budget approval of $15,000 from the Rate Stabilization Reserve was requested to fund the initial work, with additional funds to be reviewed as necessary.

Mayor Schummer emphasized that reliable transit is critical for residents to access essential services, employment, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He noted this step aligns with his campaign promise to address transit issues if DRT failed to improve service.

Council’s decision marks the beginning of a review process aimed at ensuring Brock residents receive transit services that meet their needs.
