BROCK: The Township of Brock is trying to help raise awareness among residents and visitors of the township’s idling bylaw. At a recent meeting, councillors voted to have idling bylaw signs installed along downtown streets in Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland.
“The signs should reference the two-minute idling bylaw and a reference to reducing greenhouse gasses in an effort to mitigate climate change. During the few weeks around the signs being erected, the Township will explain the signs in local print media and on the [township] website,” a motion made by Ward 4 Councillor Cria Pettingill read.
Councillor Pettingill explained why these signs are necessary.
“We must begin reducing [greenhouse gas] emissions, especially on our downtown streets. Where there’s [people] standing and sitting around, we must protect these people from the noxious fumes coming out of cars. I think the signs, which let people know about the bylaw and the reason for the bylaw, are very simple. There’s examples of them I think township staff can find quite easily.”
Ward 3 Councillor Walter Schummer seconded Councillor Pettingill’s motion.
“This is an important bylaw we brought in. Signage would be certainly the first and best step to start the education process and let people know that [the bylaw] is there,” he said.
