BROCK: Council has officially approved a request to rename King Street Park, in honour of a beloved family and community figure. The green space will now be known as Lodwick Park, a tribute to the late Harold Lodwick and his family’s lasting legacy of civic service, in Beaverton.
The decision was made during a council meeting, on Monday, April 28th, after council received a detailed letter of request from, Lions Club president, Ron Hodgson. With redevelopment of the park nearing completion, it was observed, the timing was fitting to recognize those who played a key role in making this project, as well as many others, possible.
“As part of the original discussions with Staff, and as communicated with Council, the Lions Club of Beaverton will partner with the Township on tree replacements and the installation of a commemorative plaque, recognizing funding contributors,” Mr. Hodgson wrote. “This includes the Harold Lodwick Citizenship Committee, the Don and Gladys McCaskell Reserve Fund, CN Rail, the Township of Brock, and the Lions Club of Beaverton.”
Harold Lodwick was well known, in Beaverton, for his three terms on Brock Township Council, representing Ward 2. He is also known for his leadership and volunteer roles across several organizations, including the Beaverton Agricultural Society, the Historical Society, and the Heart of Ontario Snowmobiling Club.
“Harold was a community champion,” Mr. Hodgson noted. “He was an influential voice for Beaverton and deeply involved in many facets of the town. His contributions continue to resonate today.”
The Lodwick family's contributions extend far beyond Mr. Harold’s individual efforts. His wife Geraldine, his siblings, and extended family have supported countless local initiatives, from sponsoring youth sports teams and local events to organizing Beaverton’s annual Santa Claus parade.
"The Lodwick family is deeply woven into the fabric of Beaverton," said Mr. Hodgson. "They are former teachers, local business operators, and long-time volunteers. Naming the park in their honour is a fitting way to recognize their generations of community service.”
The letter also highlighted the role of the Harold Lodwick Citizenship Committee which was established after Harold’s passing in 2009. The group has raised funds annually, through a “Family Fun Run” held every October. The proceeds support local causes, and each year the Harold Lodwick Citizenship Award is presented during Canada Day celebrations.
“Sixteen awards and community donations have been made in Harold’s honour,” said Mr. Hodgson. “It’s a legacy of kindness, commitment, and civic duty.”
Final improvements to the park, including landscaping and signage, are expected to be completed this spring. A plaque will be installed at the park, recognizing all funding contributors and the renaming effort.
Regional Councillor Mike Jubb voiced strong support for the renaming.
“This park renaming is a heartfelt recognition of a man and a family [who] have given so much to Beaverton,” Mr. Jubb said. “Harold Lodwick was a pillar of this community, and his legacy lives on through his family’s continued contributions. Lodwick Park will serve as a reminder of what community leadership truly looks like.”
A formal dedication ceremony is expected later this year.
