KAWARTHA LAKES: For generations, the Bobcaygeon Community Centre has been much more than just an arena. It’s been a gathering place, where children lace up their skates for the first time, where families cheer on local hockey teams, and where community events bring neighbours together. Now, this cornerstone of Bobcaygeon life is set to get a major upgrade.
On Tuesday, August 26th, Kawartha Lakes Councillors approved a $512,000 contract for renovations, designed to modernize the facility, improve accessibility, and enhance the experience for everyone who walks through its doors.
“This facility has always been at the heart of our community,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “These renovations make sure it continues to be a welcoming place for sports, events, and gatherings for years to come.”
The project will: refresh dressing rooms, with larger doors and better privacy; upgrade the lobby and main-level washrooms, to meet accessibility standards; and install a new entrance canopy. In addition, arena seating and hall lighting, both showing their age, will also be replaced.
Christopher Lyons, Supervisor of Capital and Special Projects, said, the upgrades are long overdue. “The community centre serves hundreds of people every week. Bringing the building up to modern accessibility standards and improving comfort ensures everyone can enjoy the space safely and comfortably.”
Local resident and hockey mom, Sarah McIntyre said, the news is welcome. “I’ve brought my kids here for years,” she explained. “It’s exciting to see the City investing in a place which holds so many memories for families. The new upgrades will make it even more enjoyable for kids and adults alike.”
The contract was awarded to Nirvana Interior Inc., the lowest compliant bidder among seven submissions, with references confirmed as favourable. While the project exceeded the original budget, due to expanded accessibility improvements and unforeseen site conditions, additional funding will come from the City’s Capital Contingency Reserve.
Beyond addressing aging infrastructure, the renovations will improve energy efficiency, seating comfort, and accessibility, extending the life of the building and helping the Bobcaygeon Community Centre continue to serve as a hub for sports, gatherings, and community celebrations.
