UXBRIDGE: A new 3D printer at Uxbridge Library will allow members of the community to bring their ideas to life. The printer was donated earlier this year by Intel Canada, and was officially unveiled to staff and patrons on June 27th. “Our staff have been using it on a daily basis, trying to familiarize themselves with the technology. It’s been a great experience, and there are 3D-printed objects all over the place now,” Corrinne Morrison, program and outreach co-ordinator at the library told The Standard. She added that library staff are trained with the printer, and patrons are able book time at the library or on-line at www.uxlib.com to bring print their creations. There is no charge to use the printer, but Morrison noted that there is a 30 cents per gram fee for filament used to print objects on the 3D printer. “Hopefully it will be well-used and provides a great learning opportunity for people to spark their imagination and creativity,” added Ms. Morrison. To aid patrons in getting used to the new technology, a series of workshops will be conducted by Ian Kershaw, senior robotics supervisor for the library. General orientation sessions for the 3D printer will be held weekly on Mondays at 2:30 p.m. for seniors, and at 3:45 p.m. for ages 13 and up. There will also be an assisted print sessions on Thursday, July 25th where patrons will be able to bring a set of plans on a USB stick and receive assistance with printing their objects “It’s great because you can do something fun with it, but do useful things as well. Like everything we do here we’re able to provide something of interest to all ages. If you’re not sure how to use it, come out and we’ll help you,” Mr. Kershaw explained.
