Tis the season, so be kind to yourself

Movement for Life by Lauren Walker, All Fit/All Ages Gym

Holidays are a busy time of year. Between get-togethers and sweet treats, we may be consuming more calories than we’d like to retain.

How can we stay on track this holiday season? If you have a structured eating pattern which works for you, do your best to stick to it. You can enjoy a sweet treat but let’s keep it within reason.

Christmas is not a reason to let yourself go. You’ve worked hard all year, so it’s important to keep that in mind.

Try to make healthy substitutions when you can. If you are inundated by sweet treats, try to deviate towards fruit or vegetables or nuts. If no healthy options are available, then exert will power and keep your snacking within reason.

The danger is in the liquid calories such as alcohol, pop and eggnog. Instead venture towards carbonated water or a healthier alternative, depending on what is available.

I tend to eat before I venture to any holiday party. That way I can enjoy the company without the excess calories. Maintaining your same exercise regimen is important.

If you do happen to indulge, at least you can wear it off. Strength training is a huge calorie burner. A structured exercise routine will help through the holidays. Any deviation from my regular eating and exercise routine plays havoc on my system. No amount of sugary treats are worth that.

I always encourage a treat once in a while. Holidays are no exception but it’s not an excuse to over indulge. My common sense advice is to stick with what works. The choice is yours. Health is the best gift you can give yourself.
