The Artist Within

by Lauren Walker

I want to be extraordinary. I want to improve as an artist and try things out of my comfort zone. I love the idea of being able to master my craft, but I appreciate it takes time and practice.

When people ask how long I’ve been at it, they are surprised when I answer, “two years professionally.” I’ve had to work very hard, and I am willing to improve. I meet super-talented people who lack the confidence to show their work. Two years ago, I was very much in the same boat. I told myself, “Give it a try.” You have to be bad at something before you’re good. Don’t let your failures deter you. Instead, let them motivate you.

Even when I struggle, I tell myself, “You’ll figure it out.” Every artist falters. Even the most experienced professional has moments of self-doubt. Remember, you’re only human. I’m so driven to succeed that my failures motivate me to improve. You can’t expect to get it right all the time. It is really your willingness to keep trying which will determine your success.

You’ll be told “no” a lot as an artist but don’t let it stop you. A thousand “no’s” are worth it if it leads to the one “yes” that will change your life. Don’t be afraid to take a risk because the worst someone can say is “no.” Knowing my personality, I’ll figure out another solution. Better opportunities have come my way because I refuse to give up.

It is people like you who help make the world a more beautiful place. Believe in yourself even when other people don’t.

Your gift is a gift, so share it!

Happy painting!
