SCUGOG: Each year, there is a need for crossing guards within the Township of Scugog because some crossing guards retire or “move on” to other things.
Ms. Coleman said, this year has proven more difficult than past years because there seems to be a labour shortage in Scugog, other municipalities and across the province.
Crossing guards play a key role in the Scugog community, explained Ms. Coleman. Their job is to ensure students walking to and from school are able to cross the road as safely as possible each day.
They also remind both drivers and pedestrians of safe behaviour at crosswalks.
The intersection at Simcoe Street and Reach Street is in need of a crossing guard, to provide coverage, according to Ms. Coleman.
Ms. Coleman said, “So the Township can effectively provide coverage at all warranted locations across the area, they will need at least 12 crossing guards. That also includes three spare guards to cover absences.”
If a crossing guard is absent and the area cannot be covered by a township staff member or a spare guard, a notice will be posted on the Township of Scugog’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
The Township of Scugog currently has 11 crossing guards and one spare guard employed.
Crossing guards working for the Township of Scugog will be given an hourly wage of $18.95 an hour and can expect to work up to 10 hours per week.
Morning shifts start around 8:15 a.m. and end about an hour later, around 9:15 a.m. Please keep in mind, some shifts begin earlier than others, depending on the location.
The lunch hour shift starts at 11:45 a.m. and ends around 1:05 p.m. The afternoon shift for crossing guards varies, depending on the location. For most locations throughout the township, the afternoon shift starts at 3:25 p.m. and ends an hour later.
