Scugog seeks public input for Community Improvement Plan

2020 marks the beginning of the second year of ouar term of council and it is already a busy one. Staff are working to deliver the winter maintenance program, reviewing numerous planning and zoning applications and engaging with the public for your opinion and ideas on our larger plans and projects. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to the ongoing work to develop a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for both the Employment Area Lands and the Downtown. A CIP is a living strategy that guides the revitalization of communities through programs, grants and incentives. Municipalities can establish grants, loans and other programs to encourage private sector investment in development and renovation projects. CIPs can be used to promote and attract business investments, tourism, and economic development. At the moment, we are developing the criteria to assess development proposals for Industrial uses for consideration of certain incentives. The following are the approved CIP programs for the Employment Lands: 1. Planning Fees and Building Permit Grant Program 2. Development Charge (DC) Grant Program 3. Cash-in-Lieu of Parkland Grant Program Once the evaluation criteria is approved by Council, there will be an application process announced for the CIP program. Businesses that are welcome to apply include manufacturing establishments; business, medical, dental and professional and administrative offices; corporate head offices; engineering, research and development activities; and distribution uses. Next, we are looking for feedback from property owners and the business community regarding grant and incentive programs for our Downtown. Both the Downtown and Employment Area Lands CIP programs will promote and attract business investments and economic development. The Community Improvement Plan will: Continued on page 9.
