SCUGOG: The Township of Scugog is looking to bring back an ice skating oval on Lake Scugog.
At a meeting on Monday, December 21st, councillors voted to approve a motion to have the township “endeavour, with community partners, to restore the ice skating oval, similar to the Ice Palace of years ago, to [the] Port Perry waterfront for the 2021 winter season.”
The motion was made by Ward 1 Councillor Ian McDougall and seconded by Ward 5 Councillor Lance Brown.
“I’m just looking for a way for people to get outside and hopefully enjoy themselves in a socially distanced manner,” Councillor McDougall explained.
Councillor Brown stated he was “happy to support” the motion.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I agree with [Councillor McDougall], at this time of year and at this time of our lives, it’s probably more important we do something like this, if in fact we can, [more] than ever before,” the Ward 5 Councillor said.
Mayor Bobbie Drew questioned if either councillor had any potential community partners in mind.
“I’m not certain exactly, but I did speak to John Mackey prior to putting this motion forward, knowing he does have a zamboni, so he could possibly entertain that. I’m hoping our recreational staff can reach out to the BIA and the chamber [of commerce], and see if they would be able to partner with Mr. Mackey and see if the vision is a possibility,” Councillor McDougall shared.
