Opportunity Knocks for Prospective Kawartha Lakes Candidates

KAWARTHA LAKES: Residents who have ever wondered, what it takes to serve their community from the council table, will have a chance to find out next month.

The City of Kawartha Lakes is hosting a Candidates' Information Session, on Tuesday, July 14th, from 4 to 6 p.m., offering prospective candidates and interested residents an opportunity to learn about the 2026 municipal election process and the responsibilities which come with elected office.

The free session will cover the roles of councillors, school board trustees, and municipal staff, eligibility requirements, the nomination process, key election dates, campaign finance rules, compliance audits, and features unique to the Kawartha Lakes municipal election.

A representative, from Ontario's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will also provide an overview of the election process and answer questions.

Election staff will be available, for one-on-one conversations with prospective and registered candidates, following the presentation.

"I'm seriously considering putting my name forward because I want to have a greater voice in the future of our community," said, Lindsay resident, Mark MacDonald, who plans to attend the session. "Before making that commitment, I want to understand exactly what's involved and what the expectations are."

Sanya Carter, who has been active with several local community organizations, said, the information session could be a valuable opportunity for anyone exploring public service.

"Running for office is a big decision," she said. "It's encouraging, the City is offering a chance to ask questions directly and better understand everything from campaigning to the responsibilities after the election."

The session will be held in Council Chambers, at City Hall, located at 26 Francis Street, in Lindsay. Seating in Council Chambers is limited, with overflow space available, in the Victoria Room, on the second floor.

Residents, who cannot attend in person, can watch the session live on the City of Kawartha Lakes YouTube channel.
