UXBRIDGE: On Wednesday, June 25th, the Ontario government recognized 22 exceptional seniors with the 2024 Ontario Senior Achievement Award, for their outstanding contributions to the province and their communities. The 2024 recipients have made lasting impacts through volunteerism, charitable fundraising and advocacy around the province.

The Ontario Senior Achievement Award recognizes individuals who are making a meaningful difference in the lives and well-being of people in Ontario of all ages, through community service and humanitarian efforts. This year’s recipients have made lasting contributions to their communities and empowered fellow seniors, by leading cultural, artistic, educational and health-care initiatives which foster engagement and inclusion.

Local Uxbridge award recipients:

Nancy Emo, President of the Uxbridge Hospital Auxiliary Board, has been a dedicated volunteer since 2010. She played a key role in securing a new accessible space for over 225 volunteers and led the auxiliary’s transition to not-for-profit status. Under her leadership, the group has contributed over $6 million to local healthcare. Nancy is known for her hands-on approach and deep community involvement, including with the Uxbridge Historical Society and Probus. Her service exemplifies the spirit of generosity and compassion.

Dawn Gillespie, a retired elementary school principal, from Uxbridge, founded Room for a Child, a non-profit which refurbishes bedrooms for children in need. Working with referrals from educators and social workers, she’s helped over 185 children in 70+ families, providing safe, welcoming spaces. Dawn also supplies clothing, school items, and connects families to vital services like food banks and healthcare. Her work uplifts children’s self-esteem and strengthens families, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and community care.

The Ontario Senior Achievement Award was created in 1986, to recognize outstanding seniors who, after the age of 65, have made significant contributions to their communities.
