EPSOM & UTICA by Faye Ashton

First of all, we want to thank all the emergency people who had to completely change their Victoria holiday weekend in service to the communities of Uxbridge, Port Perry and those of us in between. Everyone seems to have lost trees or parts of trees, but a journey through Uxbridge, where you could drive, showed us how fortunate we were just to lose a few trees. On Saturday at 1:30 p.m., it took the weather minutes to destroy what will take ages to clean up and repair. We are thankful to hear there was no one seriously hurt.

Congratulations to Anton and Danica Filatov on the safe arrival of their baby daughter. Feliks is delighted to have a baby sister Stella Louise.

On Saturday, May 28th, from 2 to 5 p.m., an open house will be held at the Cannington Legion by the family of the late Joe Jordan for those wishing to pay their respects.

On Sunday, June 5th, at 2 p.m., the Breadalane Presbyterian Church at Utica will hold its annual decoration service with Rev. Sean Astop presiding. On Sunday, June 12th, at 2 p.m., the Kendall and Hillman cemetery board will hold a decoration service at Utica United church with Rev. Edith Ann Shantz presiding. The congregation of Epsom-Utica United Church welcomes you on Sunday, May 29th at 10 a.m. with Rev. Edith Ann as minister. Fellowship together following the service.

What an enjoyable evening at the Port Perry High School music department “Swingin Back Into Music” Spring concert on Wednesday night, May 25th. The Senior Concert band, Jazz band, Choir and the various Ensembles were just perfection. So much credit goes to Ms. Rensink for bringing all these groups to such a high calibre for our enjoyment. Even the music students from 2020 and 2021 were invited back to participate as they had missed their concerts because of covid. It was a real pleasure to see our 2020 graduate student perform in the same concert as her brother, who is in grade 9 this year. The ladies of the community are invited to a Summer Pot Luck Luncheon at Epsom Church on Tuesday, June 14th, at 12 noon. We missed getting together with you these past two years and would love to see you.

The Epsom-Utica church congregation will have worship at 10 a.m. on the following June dates; June 12th, 19th and 26th. A warm welcome awaits everyone, followed by refreshments.

We are so fortunate to have such giving neighbours who came, cut up and cleaned up the fallen tree in the churchyard. Thank you, Brian and Wendy.

After a two-year hiatus, the Utica Cemetery Board is pleased to invite you to join us at our Utica Cemetery Board Decoration Service, where we celebrate the lives of those at rest in the Hillman and Kendall Cemeteries in Utica, Ontario. We ask you to extend this invitation to friends, neighbours and family members for whom we may not have email contact information.

Please come out, decorate the resting place of your loved ones and ancestors and join us for a short service in Utica United Church, where we can reflect together on the lives of those that have gone before us in love and celebration.

We appreciate and rely on your support to cover the cost of maintenance for our cemeteries. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation at decoration or any time.

Tax receipts require the donor’s name and address. For our records, we appreciate an email address to save on postage and a contact phone number.

Donations can be made in many ways: Cash – please deliver to Pat Kerry at Green Tractors in Utica.

Cheque payable to Utica Cemetery Board – please deliver to Pat or mail to Box 717, Port Perry, ON L9L 1A6. E-Transfer – uticacemeteryboard@gmail.com. Credit Card – Canadahelps.org (a tax receipt will be issued by Canada Helps). Copies of our Cemetery Board By-laws in the new format and containing some changes and updates will be available for decoration for those interested. We look forward to seeing you on June 12th at 2 p.m.
