BROCK: The Township of Brock marked November 25th’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with a proclamation from the Township.

At a meeting on Wednesday, November 24th, Council received a request, from the Violence Prevention Coordinating Council of Durham (VPCC), for support for the 2021 Wrapped in Courage Campaign, and to proclaim November 25th as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

“November 25th marks both the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence worldwide. We are requesting the Township of Brock consider proclaiming November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. We would also like to request the Township of Brock raise a Wrapped in Courage flag on November 25th, to promote awareness of violence against women and the need for gender equality,” a letter from VPCC stated.

According to their website, the Wrapped in Courage campaign “brings attention to the issue of violence against women in Ontario.” The recommended motion cited the fact, “the COVID-19 pandemic has increased barriers to support and services for survivors of gender-based violence and their children.” It also noted, “One in three women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime.”

Without any discussion on the matter, councillors voted to approve the proclamation and to “urge all citizens to recognize this day, by taking action to support survivors of gender-based violence and [becoming] part of Ontario-wide efforts to end gender-based violence.”
