Brock election field takes shape following Nomination Day

BROCK: The race for Brock Township council is officially set, as voters face contested races for mayor, regional councillor, and every ward councillor position in the October municipal election.

Nomination Day passed, on Friday, August 21st, bringing the candidate field into focus, ahead of the October 26th vote. The Township's municipal races feature 18 candidates seeking seven elected positions, while four candidates are seeking two Durham District School Board trustee positions representing Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

The mayoral race will see incumbent Michael Jubb face Brenda Thyne.

Mr. Jubb became Acting Mayor following the resignation of former mayor Walter Schummer, and was subsequently acclaimed to the position. He is now seeking a full term as mayor.

The race for regional councillor is also a two-person contest, with incumbent Cria Pettingill facing Peter Frank, the current Ward 1 councillor.

The most crowded municipal race is in Ward 1, where four candidates are vying for the seat.

Peter Teolis, John Rush, Beth Josephson, and Claire Doble will compete for the position. Ms. Doble currently represents Ward 2 on council, but is seeking to move to Ward 1.

Ward 2 will see a two-way contest between Ron Den Braasem and Diana Vessel.

There are three candidates in the Ward 3 race, with Chris Shier, Mike Samis and Glenda Nicholson seeking the seat.

In Ward 4, incumbent councillor Ronald Hodgson is seeking re-election and will face Sally Morgan.

Ward 5 is also a two-way contest, as Anthony Macoretta faces former regional councillor Ted Smith.

With the candidate field now established, attention will turn to the campaign and the issues candidates will put before voters, over the coming weeks.

Brock residents will also cast ballots in the Durham District School Board trustee race.

The four candidates are Paul Breeze, James Bountrogiannis, Dave Brown, and Netalia Duboisky. Two trustees will be elected by English public school electors across Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

The municipal election is scheduled for Monday, October 26th, 2026.
