KAWARTHA LAKES: The midway lights dimmed Sunday evening as the 171st Lindsay Exhibition (LEX) came to a close, wrapping up a week filled with agricultural showcases, family fun, and high-energy entertainment that once again cemented the event as a cornerstone of the Kawartha Lakes community.

While the exhibition officially kicked off on September 13th, it was the closing stretch from September 19th to 21st that brought the largest crowds and biggest moments.

Friday featured a strong agricultural focus, with the Market Lamb/Kid and Sheep Shows drawing exhibitors and families from across the region. The Carriage Driving Derby and Canine Circus added unique flair to the day’s program, while the midway and beer tent kept the grounds buzzing well into the evening.

Saturday turned up the adrenaline with the PRO FMX motocross stunt show and the ever-popular Demo Cross, thrilling fans with fast-paced action and daring moves. Crowds also flocked to the English and Western Horse Shows and the Poultry Show, a nod to the fair’s agricultural roots. “There’s something really special about seeing both the heritage side of the fair and these newer, high-energy events,” said Lindsay resident Tom Leclair, who attended with his family. “It makes for a perfect balance.”

The exhibition saved one of its biggest attractions for last, as Sunday’s Demolition Derby packed the grandstand. Roaring engines and crashing steel drew cheers from all ages, closing the fair with a bang. “The Derby is always the highlight for me,” said Jessica MacDonald, a local teacher. “It’s loud, it’s chaotic, and it’s just pure fun. You can’t beat the energy.”

Of course, it wasn’t just the spectacle of motorsport that kept visitors coming back. Livestock shows, live music, and family-friendly activities throughout the final weekend ensured there was something for everyone. “We’ve been bringing our kids here every year, and it’s a tradition now,” said Carolyn Fraser, who added that she grew up just outside Lindsay, but makes the trip from Oshawa every year. “It’s about the rides and the shows, sure, but it’s also about running into neighbours, supporting local youth, and celebrating agriculture.”

Organizers said attendance was strong throughout the week, with Wednesday’s free admission day and the closing weekend both drawing particularly large crowds. Beyond the midway thrills and grandstand events, Homecraft and Junior Arts displays, horticulture entries, and 4-H competitions showcased the skills and dedication of exhibitors across Kawartha Lakes.

As the dust settled on the grandstand Sunday evening, the fairgrounds began to quiet. Yet for many in Lindsay, the memories made at the 171st LEX will last long after the rides are packed away.
