Special to The Standard
NORTH DURHAM: It was a successful weekend for two local teams competing in the Provincial Senior Qualifiers this past weekend.
At the Napanee Curling Club, a total of seventeen teams were entered in the Senior Womens Qualifier. Port Perry’s Carol Jackson came out A-side with four straight victories, clinching her spot at the Senior Provincials next month in Lindsay. Team Jackson played well all weekend, but needed to score two in the final end of the A-Final with hammer, to win 6-5 over Team Mulville from the Royal Kingston Curling Club. Curling with Carol are Laura Davis-Cook, Marilyn Plekaitis, and Pat Reid.
On the Mens side, Uxbridge’s Gary Grant skipped Bill Harrison, Dave Farr, and Randy Grant to three wins, winning A-side of the Provincial Senior Qualifier in Bradford. After beating Oakville’s Bruce Webster in they opening game, the team held on for the 6-5 victory over Rob Lobel from Scarboro Golf. In the A-Final, Grant Jumped out to the 6-2 lead after four ends, but let Guy Racette from The Royals claw back to tie the game with one end left, but Grant was able to take his single in the final end and win 7-6.
Congratulations Team Jackson and Team Grant. Provincials will be held February 15th -19th at the Lindsay Curling Club, where I would expect a lot of local fans will make the trip north to cheer on these teams.
Grant takes Uxspiel
While Gary and Randy Grant were competing at the Senior Qualifiers, it was another Grant, Karri-Lee Grant, no relation, from Thornhill, that won the mixed Uxspiel at the Uxbridge Curling Club.
Grant skipped her team of John Milne, Debbie Milne, and Glen Gagnon to two victories, including scoring maximum points in their first game, to the overall championship. Uxbridge’s Barry Acton skipped Lynda Acton, Howard Harper, and Brenda Harper also had two victories on the early draw, but it was Grant that won on total points.
Teams were treated to lunch and dinner, prepared by Mad Millie’s. Big thank you to ServiceMaster, for sponsoring the event and to Derek Marques for being the drawmaster.
Next up for the Uxbridge Curling Club is the Mens Cowspiel on February 4th, which is still looking for teams to fill the event.
Herrington’s Won by Thompson
At Port Perry’s Herrington’s Mixed Bonspiel, Rob Thompson skipped his team to three victories and the overall championship. His team was made up of Deb Thompson, Brian Murphy, and Andra Sers.
On the early draw, Port’s John Butler also won his three games, but would have to settle for second place. His team was made up of Alice Beatty, Ron Parish, and Renee Parish. In third place was Bert Hutcheon’s team.
A great day was had by everyone including a delicious roast beef dinner prepared by Red Carpet Catering. Thanks to Brent Herrington from Herrington Quality Butchers for their sponsorship of the popular local event and Paul Coveart for being the draw master for the event.
