DARRYL KNIGHT Special to The Standard
After suffering three consecutive losses, the Uxbridge Bruins roared back with a 4-1 victory over the Georgina Ice, on Friday night at the Bear Den, as the Provincial Junior Hockey League moves into its final weekend of the regular season.
With the playoffs looming, the win came as a boost to the club, and head coach Tim Evans told The Standard he expects the team to maintain its level of intensity this coming weekend over their final two regular season match-ups with the playoffs looming.
“We want to prove that we can compete at the top of this league, and we’ll be a dangerous team to face in the playoffs,” explained Evans. “We’re competing as though it’s the playoffs from here on out.”
After a night to forget about on Thursday in Bowmanville, that saw the Bruins on the wrong end of a 9-2 decision against the Clarington Eagles, the boys in black and gold were able to bounce back at home with a spirited effort against the Ice.
After duelling to a scoreless draw through the opening 20 minutes, Marshall Lockhart potted a pair of goals just past the midpoint of the second period, to open a 2-0 advantage for the home side. Simon Feig, Jack Schnalzer, Coby Gardner and Alex Siblock earned assists on the goals. However, with just 10 seconds remaining in the middle frame, the Ice broke up Jake Joosten’s shutout bid, as they cut the Bruins’ lead to 2-1 through 40 minutes of play.
A powerplay goal from Aiden Reilly, almost six minutes into the third period, assisted by Adam Bartholomew, restored a two-goal lead for Uxbridge. Joosten kept the Georgina offence at bay through the remainder of the game, as he earned his 10th victory of the campaign. With just nine seconds remaining, Cameron Moffitt slammed home a hard shot in the slot, for his first goal as a member of the Bruins, to close out the scoring on a 4-1 Uxbridge victory.
