GREENBANK August 10th - Mary Jean Till

8/10/2017

Comments

Harvesting of wheat has begun, yet some farmers are still struggling with getting hay dry. What an odd mixture of weather we continue to have!

The Greenbank United Church Board of Stewards, and all church members, thank the many folk who supported the Beef Barbeque on August 4th. Those arriving in the first hour mostly avoided the rain, which came in full force at 5:20 p.m.; but people still came, thus lending to the success of this annual event.

To all the volunteers; the Chicken Coop Bakery for the buns; Herrington’s Meat Merchant; Simpson’s for potatoes; the community ladies donations of pies and other desserts; to Dave Bell for ongoing music and sound system; to the “Cloggers” dancers; the set up teams and cleanup crew; and to anyone I’ve missed, thank you so much!

Sincere sympathy to Ken, Laurie Slute, and family, with the recent death of Ken’s mother, Eileen Slute, who was a teacher in this area for many years.

VIBE camp for four to twelve year olds is at the church August 14th to 18th, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. To volunteer or register call Mindy at 905-442-6228, or Deb 905-985-2090. There is limited space for attendees.

August 21th to 25, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, for ages five and up, is Greenbank Tennis and Basketball Camp at Ianson Park. Cost is $85.00 per child. Cheques payable to Greenbank Centennial Hall. To register call Nancy 905-718-1707.

Sunday, August 20th, 2:30 p.m. at Bethel Cemetery, Cragg Rd., Greenbank, the annual Decoration Service will be held with guest speaker Alec Jebson, who will also provide the music ministry.

Sunday church services through August are at Seagrave U.C. at 9:15 a.m., with no services at Greenbank until September. The Parkers are enjoying two weeks at their cottage, and will be back August 20th.

On Monday, August 14th, there will be a reception in memory of Bruce Huntington at Greenbank Centennial Hall, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

I will not be submitting news the weeks of August 13th and 20th. You may call me by 6:30 p.m. Sunday, August 27th, for the next column, at 905-985-0535. Thanks to all who forward news items.
