Weight restriction season on Regional roads ends April 2nd

DURHAM: The Regional Municipality of Durham and local area municipalities restrict the operation of motor vehicles on designated roads, during the spring weight restriction season, as per the Highway Traffic Act and Regional By-law 26-2018. This affects vehicles which are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle. The final day, of the Regional Municipality of Durham 2024 Weight Restriction season, will be April 1st.

Signs will be removed from Regional roads the morning of April 2nd, where these weight restrictions will no longer apply. However, note, some roads may have year-round weight restrictions. Please refer to durham.ca/WeightRestrictions for more information.

Weight restrictions are needed to prevent damage to Regional roads. In the spring, frozen roads start to thaw, making the pavement on some roads temporarily lose strength and become unable to support vehicles heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle.

Weight restrictions for local area municipality roads may differ from Durham Region. Please contact your local area municipality for details on their weight restrictions.
