Well, it has been a busy autumn thus far! I’m happy my September course filled up; and my October course is just about full. I’m teaching art courses and have decided to extend my Beginner Acrylic Painting Course for Older Adults into a November Session. I hope to do some Christmas workshops in December as well.

I’m also learning some valuable lessons about how to teach effectively. I dove into this, knowing I needed to be organized and have all the right materials. It’s one thing to take a course, its quite another to lead it. Much like the people I teach, I am also learning how to create a fun and meaningful experience.

Keep it simple: Lesson plans are most effective when they are simple. I designed a simple clock method to teach one point perspective. My students found it much easier to understand.

Use Basic Materials: From Pencils to rulers, from paint to sketch paper, you don’t need anything fancy.

Stick to a Budget: Purchase materials you can afford to replace. To start the course meant, I needed to purchase materials. This won’t be the same expense every month. Brushes, canvases and paint will need replacing frequently.

Earn an Income: What do you want to make per hour? Consider your time as an added cost. If you’re leasing space, this is an additional cost which needs to be considered.

Location: I’m teaching locally, at St. John’s Presbyterian Church which means its central and easy to get to for those who don’t drive.
