KAWARTHA LAKES: At the City of Kawartha Lakes Council meeting, on Tuesday, April 8th, councillors reviewed the Municipal Summary Report for the 2024 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM). It praised the event as a resounding success, showcasing the region's hospitality, vibrancy, and community spirit to more than 51,000 attendees.

Held from October 1st to 5th, 2024, at the Lindsay Fairgrounds, the IPM brought together farmers, businesses, tourists, and exhibitors from across Ontario and beyond. “It was a chance to put Kawartha Lakes on the map, in a big way,” said Councillor Mike Perry. “From the Showcase Kawartha Lakes exhibit to the outstanding coordination with emergency services and volunteers, this was a proud moment for our community.”

Kawartha Lakes supported the event through a mix of in-kind services and financial contributions, including a $100,000 special project budget and a fully repaid $35,000 interest-free loan to the IPM Local Committee. Despite an overall project deficit of $75,279, staff emphasized much of the support came through departmental operating budgets and partnerships which maximized value.

The “Showcase Kawartha Lakes” exhibit within the Tented City was a highlight, featuring immersive displays, developed in collaboration with over 30 local organizations. With themes reflecting Kawartha Lakes’ natural landscapes, agricultural roots, arts, and innovation, the display drew thousands of visitors into a multi-sensory experience. “People left feeling like they had truly experienced the heart of Kawartha Lakes,” said, Economic Development Officer - Agriculture, Kelly Maloney, who coordinated the exhibit. “We heard stories, we saw engagement, and we built new relationships which will last beyond the event.”

Public works, transit, emergency services, and communications teams also played key roles. Lindsay Transit extended hours and routes, while fire prevention, paramedics, and police ensured public safety throughout. “This was a massive logistical challenge,” noted Councillor Ashmore. “But thanks to the tireless efforts of staff, volunteers, and our local services, it all ran smoothly.”

Mayor and council members commended the collaborative nature of the event, highlighting how it aligned with the City’s strategic goals of fostering economic development, promoting sustainability, and building community. “This wasn’t just about plowing,” said Councillor Smeaton. “It was about showcasing who we are - innovative, welcoming, and deeply rooted in community.”

The report also emphasized, the IPM delivered long-term benefits, from increased tourism interest to improved infrastructure planning. A post-event tourism survey showed, 42 percent of attendees planned overnight stays, averaging five nights, boosting local hospitality and retail sectors.

As the meeting concluded, Council officially received the report as printed. “We are proud of what we accomplished,” said CAO Ron Taylor. “The 2024 IPM was more than an event, it was a legacy of what Kawartha Lakes can achieve, when we work together.”
