Scugog takes on food donations challenge
SCUGOG: The Township of Scugog is among the municipalities in Durham competing to raise the most non-perishable food items this month.
Scugog CAO Paul Allore announced, at a meeting on Monday, September 9th, the Township is competing in the Feed the Need Food Donation Challenge, a competition between municipalities in Durham Region.
“This challenge is part of the national Hunger Action Month. The Township of Scugog is taking part with our fellow Durham municipalities and the municipality of Durham in a food drive challenge to raise awareness and to collect food and funds to fight hunger in the community,” he explained. “Local municipalities are paired against the region, and against each other.”
They will receive donations at the Scugog Municipal office at 181 Perry Street, Port Perry Fire Hall, and at the Scugog and Blackstock arenas. The challenge began on Wednesday, September 4th, and will run until Tuesday, September 17th.
“Donations will be gladly accepted from councilors, staff, the public and any businesses that would like to help,” CAO Allore said. “If you’d like to give cash, we’ll take cash.”
He also noted they will use the Scugog donations to help people in the community.
“The donations collected in Scugog will be provided to Operation Scugog, our local food bank. They’ll stay in the community.”
Mayor Bobbie Drew is hopeful the community will embrace this challenge.
“I know our community is very supportive of Operation Scugog. We’re kind of behind the eight ball as far as competing against other municipalities because of our low population, but let’s hope that the spirit of this community in your support of Operation Scugog continues and we’ll have a good showing in this contest,” she said.
