Planting a deer and wildlife pasture

MELANIE WRIGHT Courtesy of Wright’s Feeds ‘N Needs

If you love to see the wildlife in your backyard acreage and wonder how to attract deer, turkeys and other wildlife to visit, you may consider planting a wildlife mixture to establish feeding areas. ‘Nature’s Choice’ Wildlife Mixture by Mapleseed is a perfect blend of widely adaptable and hardy perennial and annual seeds that will grow in a wide range of soils and weather conditions. It can be planted in spring or late summer and will attract many wildlife species in the area by providing feed as well as a habitat and cover for wildlife. At a seeding rate of 10 kg. per acre and planted at a depth of 1 to 2 cm, this mix is composed of forage rape seed, turnip, kale, white clovers, red clover, alsike clover, timothy, orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass grass, sorghum sudangrass and Japanese millet. Prepare the seed bed, it should be firm but not compacted, leaving the ground bare and free of weeds. The seed can be drilled or broadcasted and it is recommended to use a roller, harrow or rake the seedbed after planting to move the seed into a good soil-seed contact. Fertilize according to soil test results wherever possible. For information, questions about the product and pricing, please email Wright’s Feeds ‘N Needs at customercare@wrightsfeeds.ca.
