DURHAM: On March 5th, after being debated in the Ontario Legislature, Durham MPP Park’s Motion 91 supporting nuclear energy passed in the Ontario Legislature. The motion proposed immediate action for the Ontario Government to include nuclear energy and the development of Small Modular Reactors as a clean energy option in its environment, climate change and clean energy planning and policies. “Now is the time for the Ontario Legislature and all political parties to commit to including clean, reliable nuclear technology in our clean energy future,” said MPP Park. “I’m grateful the motion passed, but it’s perplexing that the NDP caucus unanimously voted against this motion, along with the independent Green member, when nuclear energy is a clear solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Ontario.” Nuclear power in Ontario has proven to be a significant source of clean, reliable and low-cost energy for over half of the province’s energy needs. Nuclear energy also has a proven track record of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking millions of vehicles off the road every year. “We owe it to our children and future generations to protect them from the risks associated with climate change,” said Lisa McBride, President of Women In Nuclear Canada. “Now more than ever, we need to recognize the critical importance of including nuclear generation and future new nuclear and SMR development as clean energy options in our environment, climate change and clean energy planning and policies.” Through nuclear power, Ontario has successfully reduced greenhouse gases to create one of the cleanest electricity grids in the world. “Ontario’s nuclear fleet is the unsung hero of Canada’s greatest achievement to date in the fight against climate change,” said Scott Travers, President of the Society of United Professionals, in advance of the vote. “Shutting down Ontario’s coal plants was only possible because clean, carbon-free nuclear energy is available to power our province’s homes and businesses 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. We can be both a low-carbon and prosperous province but only if Ontario continues to support nuclear. That is why we call on the Ontario legislature to support motion 91.”
