Movement for Life

It’s wonderful seeing the progress of our clients. Most of you who read my articles know my stance on active aging. The 60-plus population is invested in living a better quality of life. It’s never too late to start.

I use the old phrase, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Losing strength and bone density is not an inevitable part of aging. In general, it occurs due to a lack of activity. The truth is, if you do nothing, nothing will happen. I always encourage strength training, not just for its physical benefit but for mental health as well.

Where do you start? If you’ve never been to a gym before, don’t fret! I’ve worked with plenty of 60-plus clients in the same situation. A little bit of guidance is the best way to start. It all depends on your stage in life and your overall health.

If you’re an absolute beginner, a very basic strength training program is the common sense way to start. I’d recommend 2-3 days a week for 30-45mins, depending on your level. Increased strength means better mobility and stability.

The ability to gain strength and bone density doesn’t stop as you age; it merely slows down. Lifting weights helps stimulate muscle development. We need to stress the muscle in order for it to grow. The hormonal response which comes along with muscle development also stimulates the release of “happy” hormones in your body. Exercise helps strengthen your body and mind.

If you want to lead a better quality of life and enjoy your stage of life, being well is important. It will benefit you and those around you.

Strengthen your body and mind.
