It has been about 11 weeks since the pandemic was declared. We continue to listen and are following the orders from the province and the recommendations from health officials as we navigate COVID-19. Last Tuesday, the province entered Phase One of reopening. The province has outlined a framework for the reopening of our communities and businesses with a measured process. Restrictions were lifted related to recreational amenities along with the previous opening of boat launches, marinas, golf courses and other businesses over the Victoria Day weekend. We have to acknowledge that healthy people are in need and entitled to enjoy recreational and leisure outings for many reasons, including mental health benefits. We ask that everyone work within the rules and regulations that are in place, respect the orders, each other and continue to do your part. Stay home if unwell, wash and sanitize your hands often and wear a mask in public if physical distancing is a challenge. In Scugog, outdoor recreational amenities that are now reopened include the off-leash dog park, benches and picnic shelters located in parks or recreation areas, the pier, skate parks and the disc golf course. There is signage around town explaining the rules of use, as well there have been a limited number of picnic tables put out and arranging of alternative washrooms, appropriately spaced. Monitoring is ongoing of our parks and recreational areas by our By-law Officers, Scugog Staff as well the Durham Region Police Services. As amenities open up, I would also like to remind everyone about being neighbourly. If you go out to a picnic area or sports field and it is busy, you should not enter until there is enough space to enjoy safely. I ask that residents are mindful of each other and make use of shared spaces in the respectful and considerate manner Scugog is known for. It is important for us to recognize those making a difference in Scugog. I would like to thank all our community volunteers, our front-line workers, health care and emergency responders and all those essential businesses and their employees who have faced the daily challenges of providing service during this pandemic. You are all amazing. I would also like to thank our local businesses who have continued to provide service to customers during these trying times. Now more than ever we need to support our local businesses and shop local. We are excited to advise that we will participate in the virtual Canada Day celebration with the Region of Durham and our neighbouring municipalities. Watch for details on this exciting event. Speaking of Canada Day, our local Scugog Chamber of Commerce is running a Canada Day draw with tickets available at scugogchamber.ca. As we move ahead with re-opening, visit scugog.ca/covid19 for updates on opening and measures in place to facilitate safe enjoyment of our amenities. Township business is continuing with our Council and Committee meetings being held via electronic participation which can be livestreamed on the Township YouTube channel. Although our facilities remain closed for public access, staff are working and are available to assist.
