KAWARTHA LAKES: The Kawartha Art Gallery recently unveiled ‘Seniors for Seniors,’, a new outreach program, bringing the joy of visual arts into long-term care homes. What makes this initiative unique is, it’s designed and delivered by seniors themselves, with practising senior artists leading hands-on workshops tailored for residents.
The program combines sensory-based art making with opportunities for connection, offering participants creative expression and meaningful social interaction. Organizers say, the goal is to reduce isolation, strengthen community ties, and encourage seniors to stay active and engaged.
The pilot phase is already underway at Victoria Manor, in Lindsay, where small groups of residents are gathering in a calm, supportive setting, to explore different artistic activities. Their artwork has quickly become a spark for conversation, not only among participants but also with fellow residents, staff, and visiting family members.
“Programs like Seniors for Seniors are a testament to the power of creativity, at every stage of life,” said, project supervisor, RoseMarie Condon. “It’s a joy to see how art opens doors for connection and self-expression.”
Life enrichment supervisor, Rachel Edmondson, from Kawartha Lakes, agreed the program is having an impact. “This kind of meaningful engagement is exactly what we strive for in our long-term care communities,” she said. “It enhances well-being and supports positive outcomes, including our preparation for upcoming accreditation at Victoria Manor.”
Leading the sessions are Ms. Condon and her assistant, senior artist Elayne Windsor, whose peer-to-peer approach is resonating with residents. The Kawartha Art Gallery, with support from the municipality, hopes to grow Seniors for Seniors beyond its pilot stage and eventually make it a permanent fixture in its community outreach work.
