SCUGOG: A recent report, presented to Council on Monday, October 6th, outlined the progress being made on dozens of infrastructure projects currently underway across the Township of Scugog. Financial Accounting Supervisor, Maria Turino delivered the update as part of the 2025 Capital Project Status Report which tracks the status of all active capital initiatives.
The 2025 Capital Project Status Report, covering the period ending August 31st, 2025, provided Council with an overview of 120 active capital projects, totalling $37.6 million in approved funding. Of that amount, approximately $11.3 million is being supported by contributions from external partners, including Federal and Provincial grants, while the remaining $26.3 million is funded through Township reserves and reserve funds.
“The objective of our capital projects program is to build and maintain the infrastructure necessary to support growth and ensure our community’s assets are properly maintained,” explained Ms. Turino. “This report is part of our ongoing commitment to accountability and transparency in how these investments are managed.”
Ms. Turino noted, while many capital projects are intended to be completed within the year they are approved, some extend over multiple years, due to the complexity of the work, seasonal construction schedules, or conditional funding approvals.
“It’s normal to have a significant number of projects underway at this time of year,” she said. “Much of our capital work occurs over the summer months, and we continue to monitor each project closely, to ensure funds are used responsibly and efficiently.”
When compared with the same reporting period in 2024, the Township has seen a slight reduction in the number of open projects, from 127 last year to 120 this year, while the total funding allocation has remained relatively consistent. The 2024 total stood at $37.55 million, suggesting steady activity and progress on ongoing initiatives.
Regional Councillor, Ian McDougall asked for an update on the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project, noting its importance to the community.
“It’s important Council and the public have a clear picture of where our capital dollars are going,” said Councillor McDougall. “These updates help us make informed decisions as we look ahead to future budget planning.”
The semi-annual report is designed to give Council a high-level view of financial resource use and project progress. Future updates may include expanded comparisons to prior years, to provide greater insight into trends and changes in capital spending.
“As our community continues to grow, these projects represent critical investments in Scugog’s future,” said Councillor Janna Guido, who seconded the motion to receive the report. “They ensure our infrastructure remains strong and we’re ready to meet the needs of residents for years to come.”
Ultimately, council formally received the report for information purposes. The next capital project status report is expected to be presented prior to the 2026 budget deliberations.
