DURHAM: The new Conservative Party of Canada leader, and Durham MP, Erin O’Toole made his first address at the party’s national caucus meeting in Ottawa, on Wednesday, September 9th. In his address, Mr. O’Toole said the key is for the party to be and act “compassionate and ethical.” “Through respect, professionalism, and the pursuit of excellence, we will show all Canadians we are a government in waiting. Together we will form an engaged, ethical and compassionate conservative government,” Mr. O’Toole told Conservative members. He also discussed the issue of the party’s unity. “We are stronger, more united than ever before,” the Durham MP said. With the country continuing to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. O’Toole stressed the importance of having a strong recovery plan ready. “We must show Canadians we have a plan to get our country back on track,” he said. Mr. O’Toole wants the party to reflect the age, religious, and ethnic diversities of Canada. “Canadians haven’t always seen themselves in our party. We’re going to change that. They will see themselves reflected in the Conservative Party of Canada, and they will see our caucus as a serious, intelligent, compassionate and ethical government in waiting.” The Conservative leader opposes “cancel culture” practices like the removal of the Sir John A. MacDonald statue. “Cancel culture dooms us to forget the lessons from these stories,” Mr. O’Toole told the conservative caucus. “We must learn from their stories, not cancel them.”
