Durham Region appoints new Commissioner of Social Services

DURHAM: The Region of Durham is pleased to announce the appointment of Stella Danos-Papaconstantinou to the position of Commissioner of Social Services for The Regional Municipality of Durham effective September 3rd.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Stella Danos- Papaconstantinou as Commissioner of Social Services,” said Elaine Baxter-Trahair, Chief Administrative Officer. “Stella is recognized as a consummate professional, collaborator and a strong leader. She will be a great addition to the Social Services Department and our Senior Leadership team.”

Danos-Papaconstantinou is well-known and respected within the Social Services community. She joins the Region with more than 15 years of formal leadership experience in the human services sector. Danos-Papaconstantinou currently holds the position of Director of Community Access (which includes access to Ontario Works, Child Care Fee Subsidy and Homelessness programs) for the Region of Peel. Danos-Papaconstantinou demonstrates passion and commitment to social services and the community through her active participation and membership on various boards, including the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA) and the Provincial Municipal Social Assistance Employment Committee.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to work at the Region of Durham,” said Danos-Papaconstantinou. “The Social Services Department is inclusive of the programs and services that are essential to helping people in the community thrive. My passion for this work stems from my own personal and professional experiences. I look forward to sharing those experiences and learning from others, as we continue to build on the department’s commitment to long-standing excellence in our region.”

The new Commissioner of Social Services will oversee the delivery of Regional programs and services, including affordable housing and homelessness initiatives, diversity within the community, early learning and child care, family services, financial empowerment and poverty reduction efforts, income and employment support, and long-term care and services for seniors.
