Angels U15 strike gold at tournament

BRIAN BATES Special to The Standard

SCUGOG: Port Perry Angels 15U Tier 1 team continued its winning ways, earning a gold medal at the Ajax PanJam 17U Tier 2 tournament. Port Perry competed in the B side, after completing the preliminary round with 2 wins and 2 loses. The Angels losses came at the hands of Milton and Cobourg, with wins against Kitchener and Ottawa.

Port Perry entered the elimination round and went undefeated to capture the gold. Kaley Doerfler pitched the team to victory in the first elimination game, winning 10-3 against Mississauga North Tigers. Offensive power was supplied by Kaitlyn Hancock, Ave Marshall, Rylie Shanley, Julia Stewart, Marissa Grainger and Jordynne McClurg, all having multiple hits & runs.

The semi final game against Etobicoke saw the Angels put on a clinic of hitting lead, by Jordynne McClurg, Joclynne Jeffery & Darby Oakes. Kaitlyn Hancock went the distance on the mount, for Port to receive the win.

Winning this game set the stage for a rematch with the familiar foe, the Kitchener Klassics, in the finals. This game was a carbon copy of previous meetings between these two teams. With Kitchener taking an early lead of 5 runs. Only to have Port Perry come from behind, to erase the deficit, and ultimately come out on top, winning 11-6.

Kaley Doerfler came in to relieve Marissa Grainger, after Marissa was hit by a hard line drive, taking it off the shin bone. She would later “walk it off.”Contributing to the win, offensively, was Ava Marshall, hitting a triple and home run, followed by Darby Oakes, Kaitlyn Hancock, Julia Stewart, Erin Correa and Marissa Grainger, all scoring runs off their bats.

In spite of having several key injuries, the team is displaying steady pitching, with strong offence and outstanding defence, to continue their winning ways.

Port Perry Angels 15U Tier 1 team is now preparing for their next set of games. The team will be headed to Amherst, NY in suburban Buffalo, to compete in the Aunt Rosie’s Showcase Tournament, on the July 7th weekend.
