Last weekend, on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, the ultimate in high-tech motorsports was on display, with the running of the Formula One cars in the Grand Prix of Canada.
This coming weekend, June 15th-18th, in honour of the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Canadian Grand Prix, the FIA Masters Historic Formula One machinery will visit ‘Old Mosport’, Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, as part of the annual VARAC Vintage Grand Prix.
The four day festival of vintage motorsports, begins on Thursday with practice sessions for all classes, with qualifying and racing taking place through Sunday. The FIA Masters Historic Grand Prix series, for cars that toured the world-wide F-1 circuit from 1966 to 1985, will depart for England on Saturday, following a trio of on-track competitions.
The VARAC Vintage Grand Prix weekend is one of the most popular on the CTMP calendar. Taking place, appropriately on the Father’s Day weekend, the VARAC schedule not only includes races for the visiting Formula One machinery, but also for the touring Diamond Jubilee Formula Junior cars, the Canadian open and closed wheel Vintage/ Historic vehicles, plus contests for the more current G70+ and G90 cars.
And the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix weekend is much more than motorsports competition.
The Field of Dreams Classic Car Show rolls into the Turn 8 infield area on Sunday, where they will join the Mini Meet North, the largest gathering of Austin Mini cars in North America. After the on-track action is completed, there is the Paddock Tour and ‘Love-In’ travelling dinner-dance party on Friday evening, with Saturday’s activities concluding with the ‘Psychedelic Saturday Supper’ which takes place in the track’s Conference Centre.
One of the must-attend events of any VARAC Historic Grand Prix weekend is the ‘Legends of Mosport Drivers and Racers Reunion’ Meet and Greet. This year, the Sunday morning gathering will showcase a host of Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame inductees, including the likes of Ludwig Heimrath, Eppie Wietzes, Bill Brack, Bill Sadler and Bill Adam.
Perfectly timed for any gearhead father or grandfather, a day or weekend at the 2017 VARAC Vintage Grand Prix will provide priceless memories for any attendee. Bring your camera and autograph book and revisit the past world of motorsports in Canada and celebrate the golden anniversary of the very first Grand Prix to be held on this legendary local circuit.
